Probably the most famous song in
football, "You'll Never Walk Alone" has become the anthem of
Liverpool Football Club. Originally a song from the hit
Broadway musical, Carousel, the song was released by
Liverpudlian group Gerry and the Pacemakers in 1963.
According to Gerry Marsden (lead singer in Gerry and the
Pacemakers) whilst in the charts, the song would be played prior
to kick off, as the Anfield DJ played the top ten selling
records for that week. The crowd would sing along with the
song, and although it eventually dropped out of the top ten, the
crowd continued to sing the song, until it was eventually
accepted as the clubs unofficial anthem.
The song is still sung before every
home game, but it is on European nights when the crowd look to
roar the team on to another famous victory that the song takes
on special significance and emotion.
When you walk through the
storm
Hold your head up high
And don't be afraid of the dark
At the end of the storm
There's a golden sky
And the sweet silver song of the lark
Walk on through the wind
Walk on through the rain
Though your dreams be tossed and blown
Walk on, walk on, with hope in your heart
And you'll never walk alone
You'll never walk alone
Walk on, walk on, with hope in your heart
And you'll never walk alone
You'll never walk alone
The line, "You'll Never Walk Alone"
has also been incorporated into the Shankly Gates, as shown
