John McCartney was an
uncompromising, physical half-back who joined Liverpool
shortly after the start of the clubs first ever season
in the Lancashire League in 1892. Becoming a
regular member of that first ever campaign, John helped
Liverpool win the Lancashire League and with it
promotion to the Football League Second Division.
During the 1893-94 season, (Liverpool's first ever
League campaign) John made 16 appearances and scored one
goal, during the 5 - 0 demolition of Woolwich Arsenal in
October 1893. With John's help Liverpool won the
Second Division Title in 1894, and with it promotion to
the First Division.
Sadly John was unable to
stop Liverpool making an immediate return to the Second
Division after finishing the 1894-95 season bottom of
the First Division.
During the 1895-96
campaign John suffered from a series of injuries which
caused him to miss a number of matches as Liverpool
again won the Second Division Title, and promotion back
to the First Division. By the end of the Season
John had recovered from his injuries and played an
important part in the 4 Test Match series that confirmed
Liverpool's promotion back to the First Division.
Putting the problems of
the 95-96 season behind him John became an ever present
member of the first team during his final two years at
Liverpool, playing in every game in the 96-97 season and
missing only 3 games in the 97-98 season.
By the end of his
Liverpool career John McCartney had amassed over 120
League appearances for the club, and had played over 150
times in all competitions.
