William McOwen has the
honour of being Liverpool Football Club's first ever
goalkeeper in a Football League match.
McOwen made his
Liverpool debut on 28th January 1983 against former club
Darwen in the Lancashire Cup 1st Round. McOwen
became Liverpool's first ever League goalkeeper during
Liverpool's inaugural Football League match against
Middlesbrough Ironopolis on 2nd September 1893. He
would go on to play in 23 of Liverpool's 28 League games
that season, conceding only 16 goals. It was a
feat that helped Liverpool finish the season unbeaten,
winning the Second Division in the process.
Despite his impressive
form during the 1893-94 season, McOwen left Liverpool
for Blackpool in April 1894. He died in 1950 aged
79. |
